Everyone knows ChatGPT is smart, but we want to know exactly how smart it is regarding Black culture. Does it know the significance of December 21, 2020? Does it know what it means to have McDonald’s money? We put it to the test with an online game called “Are You Blacker than ChatGPT?” in which we ask users questions rooted in Black culture and see how their answers stack up against ChatGPT’s. We believe that Black culture is so nuanced and changes so quickly that AI simply cannot keep up. And it’s not just new jokes and memes that pop up daily; it’s quotes and lyrics from our favorite shows and movies that we use all the time. AI tools will no doubt continue to be a part of mainstream culture, but they will never be able to replace the people who shape the culture.
